The Newton YMCA is proud to continue to offer a number of classes that introduce Jasper County residents to some of the finest artists in history and passing along new and exciting techniques to take your art to the next level.
Drawing and Painting
Join instructor Roberta Wade and explore, and improve your techniques in drawing and painting. We will study and try to emulate the artistic styles of: Seurat, Van Gogh and Matisse
Who: Children 8 to 12 years old (Minimum of four people in each class)
DOTS: Georges Seurat’s paintings are made of dots, not brush stokes. Each color layered one speck at a time. As you look at Seurat’s work, your eye blends the colors for you. Draw your picture inspired from nature and then finish it with painted dots.
When: 9:30-10:30 a.m. June 15 and 22
Fees: $15 Members or $20 Non-members
Starry Night: Vincent Van Gogh’s work is full of color and thick, often swirling textures. This project lets you capture those elements in really fun way. You will sketch your design and then use paints to create the swirling designs.
When: 9:30-10:30 a.m. July 6 and 13
Fees: $15 Members $20 Non-members
Collage: Henri Matisse loved bold colors, patterns and shapes and his work is often a crazy mash-up of them. You will create a collage of fun images with no worrying whether the pieces match. No painting or sketching required.
When: 9:30-10:30 a.m. July 20

Create Like the Greats
Join instructor Frances Dack in a series of classes which teach students about some unique forms of art from quilting to Pollock’s abstracts.
Who: Children 8 to 12 years old (Minimum of four students)
Fees: $8 for members per session or $10 for non-members per session
Faith Ringgold: Faith Ringgold designs quilts that reflect pride in her African-American heritage. During this class you will create a simple quilt frame that can be used to enhance your favorite summer photo or picture.
When: 10-11 a.m. June 16
Mondrian: Mondrian created pictures to express thoughts and feelings with straight lines and simple colors. You will work with rulers, tape and paints.
When: 10-11 a.m. June 23
Jackson Pollock: Jackson Pollock wanted his work to be different from photography. He created “action painting” and uses throwing and spattering to create the effect. Bring a paint shirt; weather permitting the class will be outside.
When: 10-11 a.m. July 7
Van Gogh: Vincent Van Gogh’s work is full of color. Learn about his work and how to recreate it.
When: 10-11 a.m. July 21
