Sculpture dedication set for Sept. 10

Join the Newton YMCA for the dedication of the beautiful sculpture “Spirit of the Y” that graces the Y’s main entrance.

A special dedication ceremony with the artist Jane DeDecker will be at 5:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at the Newton Y. The event is open to the public, where there will be a short dedication ceremony, words from the artist and a reception following the event.

The celebration will mark DeDecker’s statue that has taken the renowned institute of the YMCA and the universally known song that supports the spirit of the Y community to ta new dimension. She has brought to life these two essential elements of the YMCA by combining the essence of the “Y’s” civic message, and capturing the team spirit derived from a ’70s pop song with her sculpture.
Jane has selected trend setting styles from over 100 years of “Y” fashion and taken specific genres throughout this progression of tie to represent the unique spirit of youth bridging several generations of the YMCA’s existence. A child clad in the conservative–turn of the century attire–forms the letter Y, a young lady dressed in chic 30’s style–forms the letter M, a child from the 60’s with his fro style hairdo and bell bottom pants forms the C, and the child from 21st century with a backpack in tow forms the A. Jane has brought together the universal appeal the YMCA organization has provided to all ages and ethnicity’s. There are no cultural borders to separate ethnic backgrounds of the families rather one healthy community participating in the joy the Y provides its patrons. It educates and nurtures its children both physically and mentally to keep involved and active citizens of their communities.

Jane’s quest in creating this sculpture was to capture the joy and celebration of children as they experience the great outdoors and the intimate world of expanding their creative minds. Enjoy this sculpture and may the Y be a permanent part of your family and community.

Hop on my hog! Moped class to begin in September

Those wishing to receive their moped license can do so after signing up for the upcoming sessions of the Moped Class offered at Aces Teen Club.

There are two sessions currently scheduled on Sept. 14 and 16 and then Oct. 11 and 14. Both sessions classes are from 5 to 8 p.m. You must be present at both classes of the two-day session to receive certification. Cost for the class is $35. Register at Aces Tean Club or call 792.8336 for more information.

EVER meeting Tuesday afternoons

EVER is a program for fourth- and fifth-graders that focuses on building leadership skills through team building activities. This program takes place at Baxter Elementary school and students voluntarily attend during their recess Tuesday’s to take part in the activities.

Hey girls join Girl Power!

Girl Power is a great chance for young women to come talk with friends and a female staff member about issues that face young women in today’s society, like self image, school, peer pressure, and have fun! Any high school or middle school girl is encouraged to attend as there is no fee for this group. Girl Power meets every Friday afternoon from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. at Aces Teen Club.

Be a part of Aces Teen Leadership

Become a part of the teen leadership group at Aces Teen Club. Students talk about issues facing teens today and how they can become leaders with in their schools and peer groups. Students help plan community service projects, take part in skill building activities, plan fundraisers and build relationships with other teenagers in the community. Students also get opportunities to attend leadership rallies throughout the school year and attend leader’s school in the summer. Any student interested is encouraged to attend as this group meets at Berg Middle School in the old gym from 2:15-3 p.m. This group is free for anyone in middle school or high school.

TTFN (Tomorrow’s Teen Fun Night) is back for the school year.

TTFN is a fun evening of games, crafts, snacks for youth in fourth through sixth grades. Kids can participate in skating, dodgeball, climbing the rock wall, and games. Students receive free snack as well. Come and meet others in your grade and make new friends before entering middle school.

TTFN is from 7 to 9 p.m. the first and third Saturday of each month and the cost is only $5 per person. A signed waiver is needed on file for use of the skate park and rock wall at these events.

Join us after Newton’s home football games for music, dodgeball, food and fun this fall!
Aces Teen Club is hosting an evening of fun following the Cardinals’ victory on Sept. 10, 24, Oct. 8, 22 from 9 to 11 p.m. at the teen club.

The event is open to all Jasper County students in seventh through 12th grades. The cost is just $3 per person.

ACES hosting number of dances

Aces will be hosting a number of dances for the 2010-2011 school year. Dances are from 8 to 11 p.m. and cost $5 per person.
The first is the Back To School Dance and Overnighter on Friday, Aug. 27. All dances are open to 7th, 8th and 9th grade students. Dances are chaperoned and are at Aces Teen Club.

Newton Y Charity Par 3 Challenge swings into action Sept. 23

Get ready to golf for a good cause in the Inaugural Newton YMCA Charity Par 3 Challenge.

Every year there are dozens of worthy charities hosting golf outings. Each one for a special cause with the money being put to good use, but none are quite like the upcoming Y Chairty Par 3 Challenge on Sept. 23.

For the Y’s first charity golf outing, all the stops have been pulled. To make the event a truly unique experience every hole on the beautiful 18-hole course at Westwood in Newton will be turned into a Par 3. If that weren’t enought to intrigue you, every hole will also have a hole-in-one prize of $10,000. THAT’S RIGHT $10,000!!!

Newton has never seen anything quite like this event. A hole in one could land you on a trip to Hawaii or the back of a Harley Davidson, all while helping support the largest non-profit in Jasper County — the Newton YMCA! For $65 per person, you’ll receive 18 holes, cart, lunch, a golf gift and entered into prize drawings. You’ll also be helping support new playground equipment for the Newton YMCA daycare.

Spots are filling up fast for the 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun starts. Space is limited to 144 golfers so don’t delay in signing up for a one-of-a kind event in Newton.
