Get ready to golf for a good cause in the Inaugural Newton YMCA Charity Par 3 Challenge.
Every year there are dozens of worthy charities hosting golf outings. Each one for a special cause with the money being put to good use, but none are quite like the upcoming Y Chairty Par 3 Challenge on Sept. 23.
For the Y’s first charity golf outing, all the stops have been pulled. To make the event a truly unique experience every hole on the beautiful 18-hole course at Westwood in Newton will be turned into a Par 3. If that weren’t enought to intrigue you, every hole will also have a hole-in-one prize of $10,000. THAT’S RIGHT $10,000!!!
Newton has never seen anything quite like this event. A hole in one could land you on a trip to Hawaii or the back of a Harley Davidson, all while helping support the largest non-profit in Jasper County — the Newton YMCA! For $65 per person, you’ll receive 18 holes, cart, lunch, a golf gift and entered into prize drawings. You’ll also be helping support new playground equipment for the Newton YMCA daycare.
Spots are filling up fast for the 9 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. shotgun starts. Space is limited to 144 golfers so don’t delay in signing up for a one-of-a kind event in Newton.
To register visit the Newton YMCA, Westwood Golf in Newton or click here for golf registration.

Newton YMCA unveils new logo
August 16, 2010

The Jasper County community will be noticing a new look at the Newton YMCA. The Y, in conjunction with the YMCA of the USA, will be changing its logo – a first in 43 years.
The logo change is being made in an effort to increase an understanding of the impact the YMCA organization makes in communities across the nation. Through the new logo and “rebranding” of the Newton Y – the largest non-profit in Jasper County – will extend its reach in Newton and surrounding communities to nurture the potential of area youth, improve the health of the community and provide opportunities to support neighbors.
The YMCA is unveiling a new, more forward-looking logo that reflects the vibrancy and diversity of the organization, and a framework that focuses resources on three core areas: youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. In another major change, the nonprofit will be called “the Y” to align with how people most commonly refer to the organization.
“The Newton YMCA is truly excited about the new brand strategy and the opportunity to engage more people in the areas of healthy living, social responsibility and youth development,” said Tom Vanderlaan, executive director of the Newton YMCA. “There are many exciting changes taking place at our non-profit organization. We are building momentum, and this strategy is getting everyone from our volunteers to our members and donors very excited in helping us take our community Y from good to great.”
The Y, with its new logo, will continue to offer all its services to everyone in Jasper County regardless of their financial status. From personal training to pottery classes, daycare to gymnastic and dance lessons, the Newton Y’s mission to positively impact the community continues on since it was first established in 1874.

Former NBA star Bobby Hansen stops by Newton Y
July 14, 2010

Kids participating in the 2010 Summer Basketball Camp sponsored by Newton YMCA and Skiff Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation had a special visitor during camp events on Wednesday.
Former Iowa Hawkeye and former NBA player Bobby Hansen stopped by the Newton Y to share some fundamentals of both basketball and life with a group of kids. Hansen played for the University of Iowa Hawkeyes — including the 1980 Final Four team — and was drafted into the NBA by the Utah Jazz in 1983. Hansen was eventually traded and ended up playing his final season with the Chicago Bulls, helping Michael Jordan, Scottie Pippen and Coach Phil Jackson win the championship in 1992.
During his time at the basketball camp, Hansen shared the need to be active, work on fundamentals of the game, keep good grades, be good citizens and stay away from drugs, alcohol and other danger to be succesful not only on the court but off.
Kids also were treated to an hour of drills, question and answer session and got autographs and photos with the basketball star, who now works at the Iowa Speedway in the business development department.
The Newton YMCA would like to thank Mr. Hansen for spending the morning with the Y camp and helping spread the mission of the Newton YMCA to build strong kids, strong families and strong community!
